New and Potent Power

When social media came into our lives, I think most of us viewed it as another cyber toy, to some a convenient way to communicate with a circle of friends, to others a way to insult and denigrate, safely hiding behind the anonymity of an avatar.

As one who was basically dragged into all things cyber-related by my computer savvy son, when I did finally - however reluctantly - come on board I found a world of possibilities, and I mean "world" in the literal sense.

I was amazed at the scope of social media, at the instant planet wide distribution of opinion, praise, criticism and commentary. The freedom to say whatever was on your mind and have like-minded, and un like-minded people respond in a matter of seconds.

And with the exception of a badly worded post or an unnoticed auto-speller quirk, your undiluted statement is set loose for all the world to see, agree or disagree with, and once you hit that send button, you are forever held responsible for the content, but at least the cyber community knows how you feel.

Of course, in the case of people like me, whose posts don't affect world events or reveal policy, it makes little difference. But when a world leader, or a world leader to be, takes to social media, his words can have serious ramifications, and information, free from the editorial coloring of the media gets to the public.

For the first time in the history of the world, a communications entity exists by which the un-doctored, un-rearranged, unbiased, riddled words of a president can be instantly communicated bypassing all other mass media outlets. Cut to the chase, straight ahead transcripts of un-minced words and naked information, a president actually taking his case to the people without it being filtered through the auspices of an obviously slanted media.

Christiane Amanpour's, meant to be disparaging statement, "He did an end run around us", referring to President-elect Donald Trump's taking to cyberspace, instead of press conference to let his opinion and policies be made public, to me, heralded a whole new way of news coming out of the White House, free of the snide remarks and on camera raised eyebrows.

Does this make the media irrelevant in presidential coverage? It absolutely does not.

Does it somewhat "hold their feet to the fire" in presidential coverage? It absolutely does.

From Ms. Amanpour's remarks she seems to accuse Trump of playing dirty pool, that how dare he speak directly to the people who elected him without benefit of editing, analysis and slicing and dicing by the contingent of talking heads who pollute our television screens.

Now myself, I favor a from the horses mouth approach and think it's a wonderful way for the president to communicate with the public and would encourage him to adopt Meerkat or Periscope and stream it live. Let the people hear, see and decide for themselves without straining it through the innuendo and obvious vocal moderations of some news anchor whose tacit intention it is to spin the meaning.

So bring it on, Mr. President-elect, take it to the people, empower America to make up its own mind free from media influence.

The more the merrier.

What do you think?

Pray for our troops, our police and the peace of Jerusalem.

God Bless America

Bring it on
Amen, Amen & Amen Charlie, kind of reminds me of President Roosevelt's fireside chats, as you say straight from the horses mouth. Maybe why he got elected 4 times. I am praying for two from Trump and two for Pence. Better than from the horses rear end we got now. God Bless Plowboy

New and Potent Power post
FDR did something similar with his "Fireside Chats," and Reagan was pretty good at reaching the masses. Imagine what they could have done with Facebook and Twitter.

social media
I could not agree more, the media has way too much influence on public opinion. They are supposed to report the news not have an opinion>

New and Potent Power
Thank you for this post, I think the world so needs unfiltered speeches and decisions. It would actually be awesome if President-elect Trump had a forum such as your Soapbox! I have been on Facebook for five years now and was introduced to social media with Myspace. I do not have twitter, but am ready to open a twitter account just so I can get Trump's posts. I have long been disgusted by the liberal media and the fact that they pride themselves on SHAPING the news rather than reporting it. They have also claimed to be the power that gets Presidents elected but obviously they missed the boat on this one. I truly believe that Trump is God's anointed choice to turn this country around and bring it back to HIM! Thank you for your music, I have it all on MP3 player, (I'm only telling you that because someone else said they have all of your music on Ipod!) I love The Door and Steel Witness and am also grateful that you are willing to be just such a "Steel Witness." I pray that I am too.

I Totally Agree, Charlie!
I totally agree w/ this blog, Charlie (actually I Totally Agree w/ about 80-90% of your blogs)! I also agree w/ the post by Jill; it would be Wonderful if Trump had a Soapbox (like this) to communicate w/ the public! From time to time, his people would just need to/ should place some ads over the four main tv networks Notifying the public of same! Although I'm your son's age, I'm more like you when it comes to tech advances--reluctant at first, but aware of the benefits. However, unlike you, I don't have your son here to to patiently set up and teach me how to use all these different social media outlets (I wish he were here, along w/ your awesome grandson!), but I do know how to access and read Soapboxes/Forums. Therefore, that type of outlet would be Great for Trump to have! And, then if the mainstream media wants to interview him, Trump should make them sign a written agreement that the interview will NT be edited or rigged in any way!

President speaking to the people
Mr. Daniels, First I would like to say I have been a fan since the first time I heard yor bands music. I do agree that our president should be open to direct conversation via internet with the citizens when there is time in his busy schedule. However; what president elect Trump has been tweeting , is by far not presidential nor adult in manor. He uses twitter like a high school girl. He would be more respected if he kept some of his thoughts to himsef. Somethings are really better left unsaid. I do read his tweets . Also try to advise him on how he it makes him apear to genral public. Guess he only tweets and doesnt read tweets from anyone unless they are rich and famous. God bless you . Peace to the world.
