Cast the First Stone

I was born in 1936 when many of the small towns in the South were controlled by two or three and in some cases one family. They owned many of the retail businesses, significant interest in banks and other entities that determined the ebb and flow of available credit in the area and exerted significant influence over local politics.

Not all were bad people, some were philanthropic and worked for the good of the common man, but some were greedy, power-hungry, vindictive and never above seizing the property of an unfortunate who couldn’t make their payments on time, or forcing a sharecropper off their land for whatever reason suited their purposes.

They froze trade unions out of their areas so the competition and price of labor wouldn’t go up, and they and their families got away with just about anything that stayed on a local level.

This always nauseated me, to see the rich and powerful live above the law, seldom having to bear the penalties of their transgressions while the common folk had to toe the line.

Succeeding generations of heirs who sometimes squandered their inheritances or sold them off has, for the most part, broken up these mini-fiefdoms and watered down the political and financial power certain families once had, but the thought of the local elite skating on traffic accidents they were in fault of, and lording it over everybody who was not in their cliques still rankle, so, since the days of my earliest remembrances I have hated two standards of justice.

During the Watergate years, I very much wanted to see the guilty held to the same standard of justice as the common folks, and in this one instance, it seems that it happened, as at least most of those at fault were rooted out and paid their debt to society in one way or another.

Now we are faced with a situation whose ramifications go far beyond anything Watergate could ever have caused. We are faced with a president being accused of what amounts to treason, and if he were to be guilty, chop the log and let the pieces fall where they will.

As an American who loves and values my country and its welfare far above the fate and fortunes of any politician or political party if President Trump or anybody who has the ability to affect the security and prosperity of America has colluded with Russia or any other country in a way that would harm this nation, I want them tried, convicted and looking through bars for the foreseeable future.

On the other hand, if Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Jim Comey or anybody else in that camp has colluded, cooperated with, taken money from a foreign power, deceived the justice system for their own purposes, lied to, mislead or refused to cooperate with congressional hearings I want to see them held to the same standard.

So far, in eighteen long months, despite the unprecedented parameters Rod Rosenstein has granted Muller, in spite of the ever-changing direction and the proven fact that the whole investigation was instigated by the opposing political party presenting uncorroborated evidence to a FISA court, despite the thousands of man-hours and millions of taxpayer dollars that have been expended so far, the only result of the panoramic investigation has been the charging of some minor players indicted on unrelated charges and what is now resembling the grasping of straws, the original “colluding with Russia” goal has been long abandoned and anything goes, from casting aspersions to brutally coercing people whose unrelated charges happened long before they had any relationship with the president.

I can’t prove it now, but know enough about the situation to believe with all my heart that Hillary Clinton lied about not being able to get help to the besieged Embassy Annex in Benghazi and believe that when certain parties end their military obligations and are willing to talk about it, it can be proven that there were available military assets in the immediate area, equipped and ready to come to the rescue, but were not allowed to.

But I guarantee that if such an exhaustive investigation into the Benghazi affair, the obtaining of the FISA warrant, the Clinton Foundation, the unsecured email server that was hacked by foreign governments and many other things she has been involved in, enough dirt could be dug up to fill the Panama Canal.

Face it America, we are seeing two standards of justice and it’s no different from the days of my youth when the well-connected got away with everything.

And don’t think that if this miscarriage of justice is allowed to continue that it won’t trickle its way down to street level, where we will see selective prosecution and partisan judgments.

It’s a scary thought that the power to detain indefinitely, to harass and coerce innocent people into confessing to crimes they didn’t do with threats of bankruptcy and harm to their families can be placed into the hands of someone with a political ax to grind.

If you dig back far enough and deep enough into anybody’s past, something can be found that could be embarrassing or twisted into something resembling breaking some minor law.

Even the ones who are doing the investigating.

When you stir up garbage the filth splashes both ways.

What do you think?

Pray for our troops, our police and the peace of Jerusalem.

God Bless America

Mr. Daniels, very well said. It's beyond me how these course of events are not unfolding on the Almighty Clinton Clan. I can only pray that newly discovered evidence will pull out our "Perry Mason" to defend old glory

Hang em High
Amen, Amen & Amen Charlie, hold them all accountable. When t the truth on all this comes out I'm betting the farm that Obama, Hillary & Company are guilty as sin. The order to stand down in Benghazi could have only came from one person, that being the Commander In Chief, none other than the Muslim, Keynan born sodomite, Barack Hussein Obama. The attack on the US embassy was an act of war and should have been responded to as such. I presume that is a result of Obama not having no gonads, just like when someone crossed his line he just moved the line a little farther back. As you state Mr, Daniels, two standards of justice is as wrong as wrong can be. The liberal left
Anyone can say what they want about the so-called liberal left. Truth is, to those who have been here a spell, we are seeing the advance of Communism in this country.

Never what people think
You ask the average person if they think Trump got the Russians working with him to sway the election in his favor, they might say yes or no. Ask someone from the far right and they will say that Hillary Clinton should be locked up. Conservatives are going to keep on investigating her till they get booted out of office. Or to quote Charlie,”It’s a scary thought that the power to detain indefinitely, to harass and coerce innocent people into confessing to crimes they didn’t do with threats of bankruptcy and harm to their families can be placed into the hands of someone with a political ax to grind.” Looks like this time, Charlie and his buddies are holding the axe. So what about Trump? Is it a proven fact that the FBI investigation was approved on the basis of the Steele document? No. Did the Democratic Party present the dossier to the FISA court? No. Is the dossier without any truth in it? No. Have only ‘minor players’ been indicted? No. Is collusion with Russia no longer the focus of the investigation? No. Is the investigation so broad that the parameters are unprecedented? No. Think investigation of Whitewater stock fraud and then explain to me what Monica Lewinski had to do with it. “This always nauseated me, to see the rich and powerful live above the law, seldom having to bear the penalties of their transgressions while the common folk had to toe the line.” And he voted for Trump.

Selective reading much, Mr. Daniels?
Trump has all BUT admitted to colluding with Russia! He's acknowledged that his son's meeting with a Kremlin-connected lawyer in 2016 had to do with getting damaging information on Hillary Clinton; (not-so) oddly enough, this contradicted a statement dictated by Herr Trump, but released under the name ''Donald Trump, Jr." wherein it was stated that: “We primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children that was active and popular with American families years ago.” Moreover, Trump's political maneuvering, which involves insulting NATO allies and cozying up with Russia would seem to suggest that Herr Trump, and Little Horn Putin have their own designs on the worldwide power structure. And, deflecting to the really tried (and tired) arguments about Hillary Clinton and Benghazi don't change the fact that trump has INDEED been colluding with a foreign, and historically hostile (to the U.S.) power. Indeed, it's high time you find another discourse "refuge" instead of repeating Benghazi all the time!

Agreed Dana
Dana, we finally agree on one thing, Monica Lewinsky, What slick Willy and her did in the Oval Office is fine by me as long as it was consensual, they only need to answer to God and Hillary. Just like with the Donald and Stormy, not saying that it is true, but if so he needs to answer only to God & Melania. Besides if it happened, Trump was a Demoncrat then which helps explain it. I cannot wait until the truth comes out on the dastardly deeds of this past administration, then people will start understand what drives these socialist, commie despicable deplorables For I will always cling to my King James Bible and Smith & Wesson......nuff said God Bless

Almost, Plowboy.
Well, we almost agree. The reason sex offenders register with the government is because of recidivism. Once a predator, always a predator, Trump included. There is a reason he is the first president to put a lock on his door in the White House and spend his weekends at his personal clubs. It is a matter of concern if Trump is shooting off his mouth as he so often does. Otherwise, as you say, it is between him and his family. My point was that Ken Starr went way off the map on the Whitewater investigation. Mueller’s investigation seems narrow by comparison. Always a pleasure to read your comments.

Way it is.
You said quite the mouthful. That is the way it was, either the fodder for songs or stories, but it's not something we to be. However, many of us now feel the justice is busted like a dam. The elite and powerful do have a way around it. Just the way it is, and what I see playing out. That sure hasn't changed by putting an outsider in the White House, and obviously there is only so much even he can do. Those who can wield the access and the ‘process’ to make their case. A stinky case at that. But enough people must be schooled in that 'system' that it keeps flowing, picking the well heeled winners and losers. The Benghazi 4 were unfortunately losers. Those responsible in charge, without accounting even for their whereabouts, were the guaranteed the winners. We wanted to believe it wasn't going to end that way, after all is done, but that's the way it is…. Until it is different. I’m from Missouri now.

Just for fun - new present day political lyrics sung to, "Long-Haired Country Boy".
Friday, August 17, 2018 Donald G. Reininger 148 Allison Lane Madison, MS 39110 601-826-3614 [email protected] Dear Mr. Daniels, I was sitting in my office the other evening plinking on my guitar when I looked up “Long Haired Country Boy”. This song has been a long-time favorite for me with its catchy hammer-on lick and down home lyrics. I read your Soap Box on the CDB site and think it’s fair to say we share common values. So I took the liberty of penning some lyrics to go with your song reflecting some more recent political happenings. I just thought I’d share them with you. Thank you. Sincerely, Donald G. Reininger Lieutenant Colonel, USA Retired “Legal Votin’ Man”, Music by Charlie Daniels, Lyrics by Don Reininger The lady cast me in a basket, said that I can’t see the light Now I conceal what I carry, cuz I believe it’s right. You talk about inclusiveness, and how the state is here to serve You don’t have a clue how it works, but you damn sure got your nerve. Now I ain’t asking nobody for nothing, if I can’t get it on my own. If you don’t like the way I’m livin’, you just leave this legal votin’ man alone. I read about Benghazi, I learned how our brave men died You allege Fascism, but you’re the one who lied. Mr. Nakoula, in the dead of night, was arrested as the news crews rolled Sounds like those ole brown shirt goons, were just doing as they were told. Now I ain’t asking nobody for nothing, if I can’t get it on my own. If you don’t like the way I’m livin’, you just leave this legal votin’ man alone. Barry couldn’t get consensus, so he ruled with a pen and a phone Harry, Chuck, or Nancy, couldn’t make a go of it alone. Bernie and his new friend Alex, want to live in a Socialist state Maybe he can teach her, to have a two million dollar estate. Now I ain’t asking nobody for nothing, if I can’t get it on my own. If you don’t like the way I’m livin’, you just leave this legal votin’ man alone. Now I served my country proudly, took my family all abroad I came home to this fabulous land, and bought me a piece of sod. Things are gettin’ better, but I hope it’s not too late I pray to God each and every day, to show America grace. Now I ain’t asking nobody for nothing, if I can’t get it on my own. If you don’t like the way I’m livin’, you just leave this legal votin’ man alone.

The CDB team is not obligated to allow my 'contamination' of this site but I appreciate their forbearance. Speaking for myself, I have never called anyone here a 'bottom feeder' or a 'garbage peddler' and do not plan to. I enjoy reading Charlie's views though they may not reflect my own views and also like reading the comments here as they allow me an understanding of a point of view I find difficult to understand. I think you would be the poorer if the only comments you had the opportunity to read were ones that you agreed with.

Benghazi old news ?
Sorry, whenever I hear stop talking about and bringing up Benghazi, I hear "what difference at this point does it make?" all over again. First of all, they never wanted to talk about it right when it happened. It was never the right time. It's a systemic part of the problem. Been there done that and heard the lies. Frankly, it looks like they didn't want to talk about it before it happened either, which likely had a lot to do with it.

On a side note about speech
I know this: Charlie Daniels is a stand up guy, to the core. And I’m sure Team CD, whoever they are, are too. Now I’m a known reader of other points of view, by choice. I don’t hold to or believe in any fairness doctrine on speech. Though I have as much respect as afforded me by my situational compadres who differ. But I wanted to note there was an episode where a liberal-leaning musician actually came off the stage and beat on one of the paying fans for disagreeing with the musician’s screed spouted on stage. Well, he even continued a verbal assault after returning to the stage. One example of the lollipop left who always lectures us on tolerance for other views. However strongly one holds their views, I wish this would not happen anyplace. That’s where we are folks, when something like that can happen and others cheer and treat it like fair game. So I know who the left is, whatever name they use, and I have no illusions. But actually, it would be nice to hear a healthy round of criticism from the ‘left of center.’ about that incident. I suppose that reveals something too. Again, no it should not be forced or coerced. In fact, I wish it would be spontaneous but… (crickets) (and it's been a while already)

Lollipop left
Jeff, If you are angry about an assault by a punk rocker on a guy flipping him the bird, let me assure you that anyone who goes to a punk rock concert and makes rude gestures at the band is asking for trouble regardless of politics but thanks for digging deep enough for that bit of silliness.

To Dana / Robert
“…but I appreciate their forbearance.” That’s how principled people generally operate. I admit at times your comments read a bit condescending to others. Yet there they are. I take those sort of the way it was intended. For instance this: “also like reading the comments here as they allow me an understanding of a point of view I find difficult to understand.” Well, under glass and a microscope one can attempt to “understand” them. Or may require assistance. I don’t know the degree of difficulty but are those views or ideas really that foreign? I have a hard time accepting or understanding that. Well, is one willing to understand them? I find that to be a general social problem, not applying that to you here at all, but just to general society.

Silliness --- violence
I think that calling it a "... bit of silliness" says it all. I'm sure the judge will see it that way too. Thanks for that clarifying, enlightening, learned point of view.... I would be the poorer without.

Took me a while to even track down the event, Jeff. Just a word of advice, if you attend a punk rock concert and stand in front of the stage making a nuisance of yourself, there is going to be trouble. I can recall sedate country musicians leaping into the audience fists flying when stuff like that happens. Let me know what the judge if any decides. My bet is that it never gets beyond an overblown article on the Internet.

It can be proven???
'it can be proven that there were available military assets in the immediate area, equipped and ready to come to the rescue, but were not allowed to.' There should be an investigation into this then! Oh wait, there already was. You really think a republican held congressional committee would not have found this out if it were true? God, you're adorable!
Posted by Nick
Foreign?
“but are those views or ideas really that foreign?”. Yes, Jeff. There are people who have sent death threats to the parents of children killed at Sandy Hook. There is a guy who ran his car at top speed into a group of protesters in Charlottesville. There is a guy in the presidency who got there because the Russians dumped thousands of unflattering e-mails about the other party onto Wikileaks. There is a guy who walked into a pizza parlor with an assault weapon to break up a child sex slave ring that did not exist. There are Nazis parading down the street who the president says are fine people. A president pretends that he will build an enormous wall and Mexico will pay for it and people applaud. Yes, it is foreign to me. These are crazy things I have never seen. I thought I had seen it all but I have never seen anything to equal this.
Posted by Dana
Crazy is as ...
Just over a year ago a Bernie organizer gunned down the House whip on a ball field to shoot as many Repub congressmen as he could. Well that rarely is mentioned anymore. I don't think we ever had that before. Cop shootings and assassination numbers are pretty high. Never seen it that bad before. Oh must be Nazis. Open threats to gov officials and people for how they voted. Never seen....

WOW! Enjoying Charlie
I came here to this site for the first time and was just so excited to read Charlie's soap box! I kept reading them. I so agree with him. My thoughts are like yours, Charlie. Please keep writing because it makes me feel like I am not alone... that I am not just the only one who has these thoughts. To hear just the opposite on TV and news every where is getting to be overwhelming! I was just beginning to think I am crazy. I have to stop and ponder, I know I am very intelligent, so there has to be something else going on... but to hear other's talk with such complete different views and they make, and Demand and Fight and Argue and say we are crazy and wrong in our thinking. ohh so nuts. Every time I try to write my views like yours, I get negative people respond and cut me down. I was enjoying your views, Charlie, and was enjoying your readers views, can tell they were very supportive, kind, respectful, intelligent people (because we are very intelligent!!).... then.. I had the misfortune.. a gut wrenching pain came over me to read from a couple of not so intelligent, rude, disrespectful, and unsupported people. This is exactly what has been happening every where. It isn't OK for people to insult our views. When we say our views, NO ONE has the right to criticize and make us feel lower and wrong! And that is exactly what they did to Charlie and the rest of us viewers. Trying to tell us we are wrong in our views. If someone has totally different views they should have read it, and had their thoughts and go somewhere else that has their same views. They do NOT need to express negative comments. To me that is BULLYING! I am so sick and tired of people making me feel like I am wrong in what I believe. I want to tell them I don't need to have a debate, or argument, because I KNOW what I believe and CHARLIE KNOWS what he believes and don't need anyone to try to tell us different. God Bless America God, Please Bless America! Because something crazy is going on here

You are welcome to complain about having to read a different view than your own. I starting reading the comments because I enjoy country music. And Robin Trower plays a Fender Stratocaster (signature). So? I said nothing derogatory about Gibson, or Charlie's preferences.

Charlie's Guitar(s)
Actually, Charlie plays several different guitars. He has a lot of custom guitars, including a beautiful 80th Birthday Les Paul which was a gift from Gibson to Charlie which will never be played, but his favorite as of late has been the Southern Rock Tribute 1959 Les Paul's which are modeled after that classic guitar in a red sunburst finish introduced in 2014. The only obvious difference in appearance (at least on the front) is a slight red heart airbrushed around the lower pickups.

Fascinating
So many country guitarists play a Telecaster, Charlie Daniels always goes his own way. One of the greatest country musicians it always leaves me in awe that he says he had to work at it. He is an inspiration for the rest of us who try to sound a tenth as good.

*NOTE* Charlie also cut his teeth in bar bands playing club circuits in the 60s, and found success in rock (southern rock) before being considered "country." He has also played a Telecaster many times, in fact one that he played on Bob Dylan's 'Nashville Skyline' album was on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame during its Dylan, Cash and the Nashville Cats exhibit. - TeamCDB

If it is not being impertinent and too off topic to ask, I was wondering what kind of mandolin Mr. Daniels plays?

One of the Tele's Duane Allman played, '68 Rosewood, which previously belonged to George Harrison went for about 470 K. That kind of discriminating collecting can be very expensive. Thought I heard (somewhere) Charlie had Dobro of Duane's. Maybe rumor, not sure.

Trump's Legacy
I think Donald Trump knows how to do things very unethical without technically breaking the law. I don't think much about Trump getting impeached or in trouble with the law. Instead, I believe that he's so far undeserving of a good legacy as president. Yes, he's done some good things. But I think he's got something dark and disturbing up his sleeve. He's suspicious. -- Tru Cola

Wonderfully understated
Trump entered the White House with a 25 million dollar judgement against him for fraud. He also entered the White House with almost 2 dozen complaints of sexual assault against him. He lost a suit against the DOJ who proved he had discriminated against black people in housing. He was fined for giving lavish gifts to a Mafia gangster. His charity foundation was found to be using other people's money to buy gifts and pay legal fees for himself, he was also fined for contributing 25 thousand dollars to the Florida AG's election bid after which the AG withdrew from the class action suit against Trump University. And we have not even started on the Russian stuff. Suspicious? Trump is lucky he is not in prison.
