Soap Box Archives Big Apple - Big Heart We think of New York City as being a city full of cold impersonal people who are in such a hurry to get somewhere that they pass each other on the street without as much as a nod. We come up with phrases like, "in a New York minute," and a salsa company did a derogatory TV ad about salsa made in New York City, which apparently wasn't good enough to be compared to the one they were advertising, in essence, using New York City as a synonym for big city ineptness. But if you ever have the opportunity to examine the heart of New York you find a completely different situation and you only have to look into the last few days to see what kind of people live in the Big Apple. We all know about the U.S. Airways plane, which hit a flock of birds shortly after takeoff and was forced to land in the Hudson River. The safe escape of all on board is nothing short of a miracle of God. The pilot, Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III, is a real hero whose only alternative to crashing into a heavily populated area was to glide the plane into the icy waters of the Hudson. This man should get a chest full of medals and a hardy thanks from all the passengers. The way the emergency services of New York responded was truly an amazing thing and could only have been accomplished by people who truly cared about the people aboard that plane. Within ten minutes of the crash there were boats on site and the police had divers in the water to rescue the people. We found out on 9/11 what the police and firemen of New York City are made of. I have had the honor of talking to friends and families of those brave men who went into the crumbling trade towers, not because they wanted to, but because it was their job and they knew terrified people were depending on them. And not just the police and fire departments, we'll never know all the acts of heroism that were carried out by the ordinary citizens of New York that day. These are good folks and always willing to jump into the fray when push comes to shove. So my hat is
off to the citizens of the Big Apple, thank you so much for proving
again that you're the best there's ever been.
Pray for our troops. What do you think? God Bless America Charlie Daniels
