Soap Box Archives This Week This week the people of America will vote in the most historical election in our history. I know that every election is important, but the ramifications of this one could well set the course for our children and grandchildren for many decades to come. In recent days, the economy has moved to the front of the issues that are on voter's minds and this election is probably going to be won by the candidate most voters feel can bring America back prosperity and stability, although there are other equally urgent issues to consider. In my humble opinion, the choice between the candidates couldn't be more diverse. Obama's approach to the economy is taxes. He says that he will give a tax cut to 95 percent of the working people in this country, but about 40 percent of those people don't pay taxes to begin with, so how can that be tax cut? It isn't. It's a socialistic welfare program. He also proposes to spend somewhere in the neighborhood of a trillion dollars on new social programs. Where is that money coming from? I think you know. McCain's answer to the problem is to cut taxes and let the money go back out into business and society. It is a time proven way of creating jobs and stimulating a sluggish economy. It got America out of double-digit unemployment and double-digit inflation from the Carter years when Ronald Reagan did it when he took office. McCain also says he would freeze government spending and eliminate earmarks and limit pork barrel spending. While Obama claims he would build up our military all we have to go by is his past performance and it doesn't speak very well when he voted to cut off funding for the troops who were in harm's way, and has said in the past that he would drastically reduce defense spending. It's also thought that Obama would do away with the "don't ask don't tell policy". Ask any military man what he thinks about that. I don't think I have to go into McCain's stand on the military. His experience goes from the Cold War and the Cuban Missile crisis to the Hanoi Hilton, where he was tortured and beaten and still kept faith with America. Obama is a rabid proponent of abortion up to and including the ones which take place after the birth process begins. McCain says he'll defend unborn life. There are many parts of Obama's life we know nothing about and the mainstream media, to their everlasting shame and after decades of screaming about "the people's right to know," is so sold out to an Obama presidency that they refuse to pursue anything negative about him. The opposite has been true of McCain. He and everybody associated with him has been put under the media magnifying glass, even down to a plumber who had the audacity to ask Obama a question that he answered badly, but truthfully. Sarah Palin, probably the most moral person to ever run for the vice presidency has been investigated and castigated by the media, so I think both McCain and Palin's lives are an open book. The methods Obama would pursue in the economy are a huge multi-trillion dollar gamble which could well put lot of companies out of business or out of the country. His new entitlement programs could take America a long way down the path of becoming a welfare state. His healthcare proposals will cause catastrophic harm to the medical industry. But one of the main reasons I am so concerned about an Obama presidency, I'm afraid that the harm he and a Democratically controlled House and Senate could do in just four years could well be irreversible or take a generation to fix. If we tear down the military, it makes this nation weak. What do you think our enemies are going to do? They'll take advantage of any weakness we show in any part of the world and with a weakened and demoralized military there won't be a thing we can do about it. We have Islamic terrorism to deal with on a worldwide basis and the Russians are just before becoming a big problem again. This is no time to be messing with the military. I personally believe that Obama is naive when it comes to our enemies. I just don't think he take the threats seriously. Obama's tax and entitlement programs could well sink our economy as it encourages dependence and discourages productivity. John McCain is far from a perfect candidate. I'm not in love with all his proposals by a long shot, but even at that he presents a glaring alternative to Barack Obama. So America I can only give you my heartfelt opinions. I can't tell you who to vote for, but I only ask that before you punch that last button on the voting machine, stop and consider what kind of world you want to live in. The choice is clear. I will be out of the country on Election Day, but I voted early and will be keeping up with the election from afar. I will have to comment on what happened when I get back from my trip in a couple of weeks.
Pray for our troops. What do you think? God Bless America Charlie Daniels
