Football Doldrums

Now don't get me wrong I like baseball, but I got used to not watching it when they had that strike a few years back and never really got back into the habit quite as strong, at least not until the end of the season when push comes to shove.

And I like basketball about the time when March Madness comes along and I really got a big kick out of seeing Pat Summit and our Lady Vols bring the National Championship back to Tennessee for the eighth time.

I've been to couple of hockey games and it's exciting stuff, but I must admit that I really don't understand it well enough to really get into it and soccer just befuddles me. I know in both games you have to get the ball or puck into the net, but as to what happens from one end of the playing area to the other is confusing to me.

I truly enjoy the golf on television. It's a great game but it's not a contact sport and I kinda like my games rough and tumble. There is nothing like seeing a good run up the middle or a quarterback getting sacked, unless it happens to be Vince Young.

In my book, football is king. I watch Monday Night Football, the NFL games on Sunday afternoon, the college games on Saturday and Sunday Night Football including the college games on Thursday nights.

I have season tickets to the Tennessee Titans home games and try to be there when my schedule allows. And as big a fan as I am my son, Charlie, is an even bigger one. It takes something major to make him miss a Titans home game and he knows all the chants like, "Whoop, there it is" and "goooooo Titans" and is the loudest person in the stadium. In fact, if everybody in the stadium was as loud as little Charlie the people in Huntsville, Alabama would think Nashville was involved in some kind of harmonic convergence or something.

But what I'm trying to say is that it's all good. There are few leisure time pleasures that I enjoy more than attending a Titans game with my son.

The Titans are my team but I can sit and watch any two teams play football and really enjoy the game, even if I don't have a dog in the fight.

I don't get a chance to go to a high school game very often but they're really a hoot. You talk about taking the game of football serious, the high school players really get into it. In fact, they get into it almost as much as the parents.

"Hey Johnny, don't let him get away with that, bust him! Come on ref, put your glasses on", "why ain't they throwing the ball to Billy, what's the matter with you guys!!"

I sometimes think they should have a parents game before every high school game, where the mothers and dads of the players could suit up and do all the things they expect a fourteen year old boy to do, take turns coaching, kind of show 'em how it's done sort of thing and maybe get some of it out of their systems before the teams take the field.

After the Super Bowl is over and I realize that there will be no more football for six whole months it's a little depressing, but I guess I'll muddle by somehow.

I guess I'll turn on the TV, I think the Braves are playing tonight.

What do you think?

Pray for our troops

God Bless America
