My Trip 04/21/06

As I write this piece I am sitting on an airplane bound for my beloved United States of America after spending the last several days with the guys and gals fighting the war on terror in Iraq.

My next few columns will be devoted to my experiences and impressions of the trip and the men and women I was privileged to spend the time with.

First of all, let me thank Almighty God for a safe return and I thank all of you who prayed for us while we were gone.

When I left Iraq I left a little piece of my heart with the brave young warriors who daily put their lives on the line to protect the country they love so much. They are the very best America has to offer and being in their company was an honor I find hard to articulate.

My emotions during the trip ran the gamut from exhilaration to sadness, from admiration to wonder. Tears lay close at all times and finally found their way to the surface on our final day as I sat in front of a small crowd at a distant point of Baghdad with a borrowed guitar doing an impromptu acoustical set for the ones gathered around.

The things I saw and did are nothing short of mind boggling and I will be sharing them with you over the coming days as the myriad of memories sort themselves out in my mind. I’ll talk about insight I’ve gained by talking to some very senior officers. I’ll talk about the evil and resourcefulness of the enemy we’re fighting and I’ll talk about the all but total failure of major media to call attention to any but the most negative aspects of what is happening in the war on terror.

America, you are being so deceived about what’s going on in Iraq, deceived by politicians and mass media who are using as pawns the lives of some of the finest young people on this planet, in some sordid shameful attempt to mold the world in their own sorry image.

What I will tell you in this series of articles will sometimes be shocking, sometimes enlightening, sometimes happy, sometimes sad, but always the truth from my perspective.

I only ask you to be open minded and put aside your preconceived ideas which have been molded by the media’s coverage of the war, as I present a current and personal observation of what is going on in Iraq.

Thank God for the United States of America. It’s so good to be home.

Pray for our troops.

What do you think?

God Bless America
