Anybody who has read this column with any degree of regularity in the last few years knows that I have an abiding love for America and the American dream.

But why would a country so rich in so much be so sorely lacking in common sense when it comes to some things.

For instance, there is a major battle shaping up now on saving Social Security.

We shouldn’t have to be worried about Social Security and what went wrong, the money has been paid in by the hard working people of this nation, why isn’t it available to be paid out?

The answer to that question is very simple. The Congress has spent it, and every other cent they could lay their hands on. If we want to save Social Security the Congress simply has to stop spending it. Common sense.

If we spent as much on pork as the Congress does every hog farmer in the nation would be as rich as Donald Trump.

The Medicare system has become a top heavy, ponderous program that hangs around the nation’s neck like a million ton albatross administered by enough paperwork to fill the Grand Canyon several times over.

Why is it failing? Simple. Unscrupulous doctors and hospitals cheat the system out of billions of dollars and the bureaucracy that administers it is too big, too complex and too expensive. Put the doctors in jail and refuse the hospitals any more Medicare patients and hire a few efficient people who can get the job done and cut back on the superfluous and voluminous paper work. Common sense.

People object to sending their children to a school where the name of God and Jesus is mentioned. The answer is elementary. School vouchers, credit given to parents for each child to send them to whatever school they approve of or to home school them if they so desire.

There are many commendable people in this country who have taken advantage of the welfare and entitlement programs to pull themselves up by the bootstraps to a better life. There are others who have used the programs to proliferate a life of drugs, laziness and the wholesale birth of children by multiple fathers, children who will run wild and unsupervised on the streets fostering violence and chaos.

What to do? Simple. Give the welfare to the people who truly deserve it, the indigent, the widows and those who are truly unable to take care of themselves, give the rest of them jobs. And a man who fathers a child should have to support it until it reaches the age of majority or go to jail. Common sense.

We have a severe drug problem, how do we eradicate it? We pass new laws letting the DEA, police departments and other agencies take the gloves off and handle the drug dealers like the bottom feeders that they are. That’s called fighting fire with fire.

Political correctness and common sense are locked in a battle. I know which side I’m on.
