Make Up Your Own Mind 10/04/04

I was on stage during a good part of the presidential debates
last night, September 30, and only got to see a little of it.

I didn’t really learn anything new from the part that I did get to see, each candidate pretty much stuck to their guns. But what is amazing about the whole process is to watch the talking heads and party pundits after it’s all over and how emphatic they are that their man won the debate hands down.

Some of the reasons these people sight are downright silly, referring to body language and facial expression and trying to read between the lines.

It occurs to me that one of the things wrong with America is that we allow other people to make up our minds for us. We go around quoting these people and repeating their rhetoric as if it was the
gospel truth.

How many times have you heard ”tax cuts for the rich” or some other catch phrase these people love so much repeated?

I think the best way to approach the debates is to watch them and then turn your TV off. Make up your own mind about what the candidates say about the issues or what their body language or facial expressions convey.

Why do you need somebody else to tell you what to think? God gave you a brain to think and reason with. Use it.

The thing is that you seldom if ever get any unbiased opinions anyway. Most all of these people have a dog in this fight and they want to convince you to support him. That’s what this is really all about.

In the first place I think that the debates use the wrong format. I think they should be two hours long and that the first hour should be devoted to ordinary American citizens who can ask any question they want to of either candidate. Of course there would have to be restrictions on how long a candidate could take to answer the question.

I think the second hour should be devoted to the candidates asking each other questions, no holds barred, no subject taboo. And again the time restrictions would have to apply.

Just think about it. You give one guy a minute to ask a question and the other five minutes to answer it and if things get a little bit out of hand and tempers flair all the better. Then we’d get a chance to see how they can handle stress.

The present format is a little panty waisted to say the least and is not a true debate. It’s more of an exam.

Let’s see some true colors, let’s have a good old-fashioned bloodletting and let each candidate have a chance to lay it on the line.

Then we’d have a lot better idea of who we were voting for.

And speaking of voting. Please vote this year. Vote for the candidate you think will make the best President but vote for somebody.

Pray for our troops.

What do you think?

God Bless America
