Trash and Garbage 09/06/04

As you ride down the major highways of America you will see signs informing us that this particular stretch of roadside is being periodically cleaned up by such and such local business or club.

If not for these civic-minded people, goodness knows what the shoulders of our roads would look like, as some people seem to have no conscience at all about tossing their cans, bottles and sandwich wrappers out the windows of their cars.

When you throw trash out the window of your car it’s like saying, “I don’t care about anybody but myself, let somebody else pick up my trash, I just don’t want to be bothered with it.”

Now what’s so hard about holding on to your trash until you reach a place to dispose of it?

When Hazel and myself go on long distance trips we carry a roll of small plastic bags and keep our food wrappers and other trash in them until we stop to gas up. There’s always a trash receptacle at a good fuel stop.

There is no reason to throw stuff out on the side of the road. How would you feel if somebody drove up and dumped garbage in your yard? How would you like to get up one morning and your yard was full of candy wrappers and beer cans?

Well in essence when you throw your trash out your car window on the side of the road you’re dumping it into everybody’s front yard. As taxpayers the highways belong to the people and I for one don’t want to see it marred by plastic bottles and McDonald’s bags.

It only takes a hand full of people to mess up the countryside for everybody.

I see a lot of motel parking lots in the course of a touring year and you wouldn’t believe the people who just drop trash where they are parked and drive away leaving their garbage for somebody else to deal with when a simple stop at the dumpster would have done wonders for the parking lot.

The streets in many of our big cities are awash with trash blowing up and down the street when a bus drives by.

I know it’s easy to just throw something down on the ground or out the window of your automobile but stop and think. It’s not really fair to expect somebody else to pick up and dispose of your garbage.

I urge America to make sure their disposables make it to a trash
receptacle.

It sure would make a difference.

Pray for our troops.

What do you think?

God Bless America
