The Thin Blue Line 12/08/03

If you read this column you know how passionately I support the military. They certainly deserve our support and respect. They place their lives in jeopardy on a daily basis to keep America safe and free.

There is also another group of men and women who daily place their lives in jeopardy to keep America safe and free, our police officers.

I recently received an e-mail from a police officer who had just returned from the funeral of a fellow officer who had been killed in the line of duty. Unfortunately, this happens more than we know and yet many people don’t respect the police who protect them as they should.

It seems that every time the media gets a chance to slam our law enforcement people they take advantage with great relish. And many of the incidences which they keep showing over and over again could have been avoided if the person in custody had simply done what the officers were asking them to do.

I know that there have been occurrences of police brutality and I abhor them just as much as the next person. But the rough police officers are few and far between. Most of these people are just trying to do their job, a job which is being made increasingly difficult by lawyers who don’t care who they hurt and the swinging door policies of our judicial system.

Put yourself in the shoes of a policeman. First of all, they are people just like you, citizens, taxpayers, family people with kids in Little League with mortgages and car payments, just ordinary folks.

Day after day they are subjected to the scum of the earth, desperate and dangerous criminals who, at times, are better armed than our law enforcement folks.

How would you react if you were faced with a gun? Would you start to wonder if you were ever going to see your children again? Would you wonder who was going to take care of your family if something was to happen to you?

Well it’s no different with a police officer. When they put on that uniform, it doesn’t mean they change into some fearless Rambo looking for somebody to bust. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Nobody hates violence and gunplay worse than a policeman. The very last thing they want is to get into a gunfight and sadly sometimes that is the last thing they ever do.

A good cop is the best friend that a citizen can have and they deserve our respect and support. They’re the protecters and servers, the helpers, the security, the thin blue line which stands between us and the jungle which our streets have become.

There was a saying back in the Sixties,”If you think cops are pigs
the next time you’re in trouble call a hippie.”

I am thankful for our law enforcement officers and the law and order which they preserve. And I’m just betting that the vast majority of you folks feel the same.

Let’s let them know about it.

Pray for our troops and policemen.

What do you think?

God Bless America
