Gitmo

When you good people read this, God willing, I will be in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba with a couple of the boys in the band to entertain the Navy personnel stationed there. This will be our third trip to Gitmo and I’m looking forward to getting together with some of the finest young men and women that the United States of America can offer. I was too young for World War II and the Korean War and too old for the rest of them. I can’t take up arms but I can pick up a guitar and try to entertain the brave and precious ones who do. Hazel is going with me. The kids love her and she loves them and spends a lot of time talking to them and bringing a little bit of momma to young people who haven’t seen their own in a long time. Cuba is a beautiful place and it’s a real shame that it has to be under the rule of a stubborn dictator who is well past his prime and usefulness. Fidel Castro has lead Cuba down a path of failure, through his unwillingness to acknowledge what the rest of the world knows, that communism never has worked and never will. One trip to the Northeast Gate, which is the farthest outpost on the base makes you realize the seriousness of what is going on in Cuba. There is a tall fence with minefields on the Cuban side to keep the Cubans from defecting. It’s pitiful that one man and his band of thugs could keep a whole country held hostage and living in near starvation circumstances when they could be a prosperous and thriving little nation. Cuba could be a prime vacation destination as it has beautiful beaches and the Atlantic is clear and blue. They not only make the best cigars in the world but they produce more sugar than they can find a market for since the Russians hung them out to dry. I wish that the “blame America first” crowd could visit the Northeast Gate and realize the hostility which still exists just ninety miles off our coast. Everytime I hear some bloated intellectual talking about how America is the cause of all the problems in the world it makes me want to ask them why they just don’t get the hell out of this country and find one that suits them. Every time I hear some wimpy Hollywood character defaming our military it makes me want to put a rifle in their hands and tell them to defend themselves and see how they like it. Every time I hear some puffed up talking head on television complaining about the treatment of the al - Qaida prisoners we’re holding it makes me want to dump the whole dern bunch of them in their front yard. Make no mistake about it, and I can not state this strongly enough, we are in a battle to the death, with an enemy who has neither honor nor conscience. An enemy who has brought the war to our shores. And if you think this thing is over with just because of what’s happened in Afghanistan you’re simply deluding yourself. We have many battles to fight before we win this one. Thank Almighty God we’ve got the best fighting forces that exist on Planet Earth. They don’t ask for much. They don’t ask us to pick up a gun and join them on the front lines. All they ask for is our support and speaking for myself, I would like to say to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard, I’ll be there for you if you need me. No matter what far flung part of the world you’re serving in. If you need a mediocre fiddle player I’m available. You are in my prayers and from the bottom of my red, white and blue heart, I thank you for standing in the gap, for serving your country, my country, our country.

What do you think?
