Military Christmas

This Christmas as we celebrate the birthday of the saviour of mankind in the warmth and safety of our homes with the families we love so dearly, I feel that we should pause and remember the reason we have these and other freedoms. Somewhere in some forgotten corner of the world there is a soldier who misses his loved ones but keeps the lonely vigil protecting the land he loves. There is a marine sleeping on the cold ground, weapons at the ready, prepared to give his very life at any given moment for the freedoms we take for granted. There is a sailor on a ship who would like nothing better than to sit at the family table with his loved ones, but gladly does his duty to God and country far away from the ones he holds dear. In the skies above our nation and the vast spaces above the far flung barren expanses of the earth, the Air Force fly their watchful patrols and in the icy, stormy seas the brave members of the Coast Guard protect our shores and rescue those in trouble. We owe a debt of gratitude to these precious sons and daughters who have chosen to devote part of their lives to preserve the American way of life. We should never ever forget Guada Canal, the chosen reservoir nor the tet offensive. Desert Shield, Desert Storm nor any of the battles these brave ones have fought and died in so that we might live in peace and safety. Rows upon rows of white crosses in Arlington and Flanders Field stand as an ever present reminder of the price we’ve paid to maintain the American dream. When I hear some overpaid, overconfident, pompous talking head on television belittling our armed forces it makes me want to see him or her have to put on a uniform and go on the front lines for a while and see how they feel about it then. When I think about what Bill Clinton did to our military services it makes me want see this draft dodger have to go on active duty and see what the men and women in uniform he took so lightly think of him. The peaceniks parade around with their signs not realizing, or maybe not caring that the only reason they are able to protest military action is because brave warriors have given their lives to preserve our freedom of speech. We owe our men and women in uniform a huge debt, not only the ones who serve their country now, but to the veterans and the ones who lie beneath the battlegrounds of the earth, the very soil of this nation is stained with the blood of countless men who understood and answered the call of duty, who realized that law and order is only maintained by great strength and the willingness to use it. So this Christmas, in this season of prayers and wishes of peace on earth let us remember in our thoughts and in our prayers the cream of American youth who will be far away from hearth and home and pray that there will be a day soon when we can sit down with our sons and daughters at our Christmas tables, welcome them home and celebrate this blessed season with the ones who have given so much that we may enjoy such things. Dear ones who proudly wear the uniform of the United States of America, wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, please know that the folks back home are extremely proud of you, that we love you very much and that we are in your debt for the sacrifices you are making. Our hearts go out you brave warriors and we will continue to hold you up to Almighty God in prayer for the day of your safe return.

What do you think?
