Here We Go Again

Well here it is, another political year with both major parties holding conventions and jockeying for position in the never ending battle for media coverage. Modern day politics is a dirty game at best and seems to find new lows in every national election. It’s a back alley, bare fisted boxing match where hitting below the belt is legal, a three ring circus maximus complete with verbal bloodletting and the truth is only a word in Mr. Webster’s dictionary. The partisan pundits have taken to the airwaves, to inform us of just how virtuous their party is and what a low down bunch of rascals the other side is. Innuendo, hyperbole, insinuation, oral assassination and downright lies are the order of the day. And let he who hath the best sound bite win and the devil take the hindmost. The true hypocrisy came through to me the other day when I heard that the democrats may make a big thing about George Bush and Dick Cheney not serving in Viet Nam. Can you believe that? After having a draft dodger in the White House for eight years they have the nerve to even mention someone else’s military status. At least Bush served in the National Guard while Clinton didn’t even honor the ROTC commitment he made. And I think if we were to look into Al Gore’s military record we may find that he was not a combat soldier. And guess what? We have the debates coming up, that’s a television event where the candidates play verbal slash and burn and the talking heads tell you what they meant after the show is over. Somehow I seldom agree with these people, I make my own mind up about what was said. I understand the English language very well and I don’t need some journalistic hack with an ax to grind to interpret for me. The Democrats claim to be the party of minorities and talk about bigger government and more social programs while never touching the root of the problem. If they really want to do something for minorities they would get serious about cleaning the drug dealers and other assorted punks out of their neighborhoods so they could send their children off to school without having to worry about them getting shot on the way. They would insist on English being taught to everybody because that is the language of success in this nation. They would truly upgrade the standard of education instead of catching a cold everytime the teacher’s unions sneeze. They would take the guns out of the hands of criminals instead of saddling innocent citizens with more useless laws that they are not going to enforce anyway. And I'm not absolving the Republicans of guilt either. When a large number of our military families are eligible for food stamps I think it’s a national disgrace. When their ranks have been cut to the bone by a president who has his mind more on his sex life than on the defense of this country Republicans should be ashamed that they, as the majority party let him get away with it.when Bill Clinton vetoed partial birth abortion the Republicans should have pulled out all the stops to over ride this legal license to kill. The right to choose seems to be a big issue in this campaign. How about the Boy Scout’s right to choose not to have homosexual scout masters. How about a parent’s right to choose the school they want their children to attend by being issued a school voucher? How about an unborn child who would choose to live instead of having scissors stuck into it’s brain? I'm so sick of lip service legislation and cosmetic politicals. I guess it’s kind of a toss up this early in the game. We don’t know who will win the oval office. One thing about it, if Al Gore gets elected the snail darter and spotted owl won’t have anything to worry about. I'm not so sure about the rest of us.

What do you think?
