Election Madness

This past week I watched in abject frustration as the major media made a travesty out of reporting the election returns and then with something akin to horror as Jesse Jackson and a host of rabble rousing loudmouths descended on the already troubled state of Florida to further polarize conditions. Never mind that the closeness of the race required an automatic recount, never mind the constitution, never mind the tearing apart of America and the fomenting of racial tension. Never mind any of that, just get out in the street and make a lot of noise while a sold out liberal press follows them around like a pack of hungry puppies. If there has ever been a case for the overhauling of our Electoral system this has to be it. Here we sit several days after the election with a constantly changing vote total and reports of irregularities from all over the country. I for one believe that we should do away with the Electoral College and go by the popular vote. I can understand why it was instituted. I'm sure that in that day the vast majority of the population was located on the East Coast and that the Electoral system would give meaningful voice to the sparsely populated states of the west. As we all know that has changed and I feel that the Electoral College has outlived it’s usefulness. But right now that’s the law and it must be adhered to by both parties. This situation is creating near chaos in this nation, the stock market is practically in limbo, our allies are uncertain about our future policies and people are screaming at each other in the streets of Miami. Why could the Gore forces not just let the process run it’s course before threatening lawsuits and all manner of mayhem before the final tally is even in? In case anybody has forgotten this is the United States of America, not some third world Banana Republic. We have laws and traditions. We have over two hundred years of democracy under our belts. We have fought wars and shed blood to preserve our constitution and with the help of Almighty God it will not be torn down by a bunch of radical crybabies. It truly is a shame that confusing ballots were used in Florida and that some nineteen thousand votes don’t count, but the time for doing something about it was before the election not after it. I do hope and pray that this situation will be resolved soon and accurately so we can get on with the business of being the greatest nation on earth. We are the hope of the free world and I don’t feel that we inspire very much hope when we engage in squabbling and backbiting. We need to catch our collective breaths and sit back and let the process play itself out, let America be America. I sincerely hope that whichever man wins the presidency will reach out to all the diverse factions, offer his hand in friendship to all colors and creeds, all parties and persuasions and as it was so aptly put by Abraham Lincoln so many years ago, bind up the wounds of this Nation. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
